Welcome to Day 6 of The 12 Days of Bourbon Christmas! Today, we’re celebrating Bulleit Bourbon, a high-rye bourbon known for its bold, spicy character and incredible versatility. While it’s perfect neat or on the rocks, Bulleit truly shines in cocktails. This makes it the ultimate companion for creating timeless drinks that fit any occasion—from cozy winter nights to sunny summer afternoons.
Let’s take a closer look at what makes Bulleit special and explore three classic cocktails to enjoy it in: the Manhattan, Whiskey Sour, and Bourbon Lemonade.
The Story Behind Bulleit Bourbon
Bulleit Bourbon is a modern classic with a history dating back to the 1830s, when Augustus Bulleit first crafted a bold, high-rye whiskey. While the recipe disappeared for over a century, it was revived in the 1980s by Tom Bulleit, Augustus’s great-great-grandson. Today, Bulleit Bourbon is distilled in Kentucky and beloved for its balance of spice, sweetness, and oak—a flavor profile that’s approachable yet dynamic.
With its iconic bottle and rye-forward edge, Bulleit has earned a reputation as a favorite for bartenders and whiskey lovers alike. Its versatility and lively character make it a go-to choice for cocktails, whether you’re hosting a holiday gathering or enjoying a quiet evening at home.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, Bulleit offers a burst of vibrant aromas: dried orange peel, cinnamon, and nutmeg mingle with caramel and toasted oak.
The palate delivers a lively experience, led by rye spice that’s bright and peppery. Notes of honey, vanilla, and dried fruit provide balance, while the oak influence adds a smoky richness.
The finish is crisp and warming, leaving a gentle tingle of spice that invites another sip.
3 Of My Favorite Bulleit Bourbon Cocktails
Bulleit’s bold profile makes it a natural fit for a variety of cocktails, from rich and sophisticated to light and refreshing. Here are three classic drinks to showcase its versatility:
1. Manhattan
A timeless cocktail that lets Bulleit’s rye-forward character shine. Perfect for cozy evenings or celebratory toasts.
Ingredients:
- 2.5 oz Bulleit Bourbon
- 1/2 oz sweet vermouth (add another ½ oz if you like yours dry… I don’t)
- 3 dashes Aromatic bitters (Sometimes I use orange bitters instead)
- Maraschino cherry (please don’t use those bright red ones from the supermarket)
- orange peel (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Fill a mixing glass with ice and add bourbon, vermouth, and bitters.
- Stir vigorously (don’t shake though) until chilled (about 20–30 seconds).
- Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
- Garnish with a cherry and orange peel twist.
The result is a smooth, balanced cocktail with spice, sweetness, and a touch of herbal complexity.
2. Whiskey Sour
This classic cocktail highlights Bulleit’s brightness and balance, perfect for both beginners and seasoned bourbon fans.
Ingredients:
- 2.5 oz Bulleit Bourbon
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1 brown sugar cube
- Orange twist and cherry (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Pour Bourbon on a sugar cube in a rock glass; muddle and stir.
- Add to a mixing glass with lemon juice and ice; stir vigorously until well chilled.
- Strain back into the same rocks glass filled with ice. (The remaining granules of sugar will still be in there)
- Garnish with an orange twist or cherry.
Tangy, sweet, and smooth, the Whiskey Sour is a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.
3. Bourbon Lemonade
While it might be winter, this refreshing cocktail reminds us of warm summer afternoons. It’s a simple, crowd-friendly drink that keeps Bulleit’s spice and sweetness front and center.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Bulleit Bourbon
- 4 oz lemonade (I use Newman’s Own)
- Lemon wheel or sprig of mint (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Fill a highball glass with ice.
- Add bourbon and top with fresh lemonade.
- Stir gently to combine.
- Garnish with a lemon wheel or a sprig of mint for a summery touch.
Perfect for warm-weather gatherings, this cocktail is a reminder of bourbon’s year-round appeal.
